Nest counts statewide were down and have been
declining since 1998. There were over 1,820 strandings statewide in 2006. 85% of
those were dead.

2005 Nest Numbers for Flagler & Volusia
Counties. Flagler County Beaches nesting information is incomplete due to the
banning of our ATVs on the beach by the Flagler County Commission. Our
volunteers did the best they could to survey the beach on foot, but many nests &
false crawls were missed due to the large area we had to cover without the
vehicle.

1999 NESTING SEASON (VOLUSIA COUNTY).
We had a total of 2,272 nests, the highest number documented since monitoring was begun in 1979. (This number was surpassed in 2000.) The 25 miles of Volusia County covered by Volusia Turtle Patrol had 347 Loggerhead nests.

Despite an otherwise fruitful nesting season, 3 successive hurricanes took their toll on Sea Turtles
in Volusia County.
A reported 391 nests, or 17% of the total were lost.
Hurricane Floyd was the most destructive here, causing immense erosion and wiping out 10 feet of dunes in some areas.
